SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT FOR SUSTAINABLE WATER WITH HARDWARE INTEGRATION

Software Development / Hardware Integration

Young boy using eWater tap in The Gambia Hardware Development

Project Overview

In our modern and technology filled society we can sometimes ignore the fact that many people in the world have little access to some of the more basic needs in life. Having a clean and reliable source of water is a very difficult task in less developed countries. There are many charities that place taps and wells into villages in an attempt to help; however without the constant repair and maintenance needed these sources quickly break or spoil leaving the residents to drink dirty and unsafe water.

"We were delighted with the support we had from the Digital Trading team. They really understood the product and what we needed to do, and worked hard to make that a reality using their expertise in connecting hardware to the Internet of Things."

Rob Hygate, CEO

Project Overview

eWater had an idea to fix this, using Internet of Things (IoT) technology to create smart taps that could keep track of how much water was used and alert them if a tap breaks down or fails in anyway. This would then encourage our team to send out a local eWater trained engineer straight away ensuring a clean and sustainable water source. The tap we created could do the tracking of water and problems but we needed a way to analyse and communicate the information.

To this end we created an extensive backend dashboard system for use by eWater and their engineers. This included generating usage and error reports, tracking and assigning engineers jobs, keeping track of money paid,  water given and even creating a fundraising marketplace to allow people to invest in water systems for villages; all whilst being used in the hot and dusty rural areas of Africa with little to no internet connection.
